FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Acupoint Health "Break Free" Approach

Pain is considered chronic or persistent when it lasts for more than 3 months. Typically, tissues heal within 6 to 12 weeks after an injury, so if pain continues beyond this period, especially after 3 to 6 months, it may no longer be linked to ongoing tissue damage. Instead, it can be a result of changes in how the nervous system and brain process pain, often referred to as the brain “learning” pain. Read our blog on understanding your pain here.

It’s common to feel doubtful, especially when pain or symptoms have been present for a long time. However, cutting-edge research shows that the brain is capable of neuroplasticity — meaning it can change and adapt over time and at any age. With the right support, education, and consistent approaches, many people do experience meaningful improvement and recovery, even after years of persistent pain.

Yes, absolutely. This neuroplastic, whole-person scientific approach works effectively with or without medical acupuncture. The main focus is on working with the brain and identifying your individual root causes to support lasting recovery and change.

While acupuncture is a useful addition with many benefits that can enhance the process, it’s not essential. You can still achieve excellent results without any needles — the core of this approach is about retraining the brain and body’s response patterns for long-term improvement.

Our bodies are often more resilient than we give them credit for. In fact, research shows that there is little direct link between poor posture, body structure, or movement patterns and ongoing musculoskeletal pain.

For many people, chronic pain and persistent symptoms is less about physical damage and more about the body’s built-in survival system. This system, which operates automatically and unconsciously, is designed to protect us from perceived danger.

Even though life today rarely presents the same physical threats our ancestors faced, the central nervous system still reacts as if it must defend us. The greater the level of stress or perceived danger, the stronger this protective response becomes, often showing up as pain.

This is a common question that many people ask. Research shows that degenerative changes on scans are very common, even in people who have no pain at all. In fact, studies have found that many age-related changes, like disc degeneration, bulging discs, or joint wear, are a normal part of aging and are not strongly linked to pain.

These findings suggest that what shows up on an MRI may not always explain your symptoms. Pain can often be influenced more by how the brain and nervous system are processing signals than by structural changes alone.

Interested in the research? Take a look at these studies.

Neuroplastic pain and symptoms are 100% real. It’s not imagined or made up in your mind. It originates in the brain but is experienced physically. Understanding this helps unlock effective paths to recovery.

Yes, neuroplastic approaches can still be effective even if you have a structural diagnosis (like peripheral neuropathy) or a medical condition (like autoimmune disorders). Many people experience what’s known as mixed pain where both structural and neuroplastic factors are involved. Read Charlotte’s blog on understanding your pain.

By calming the nervous system and retraining how the brain interprets signals, it’s possible to experience less pain, fewer flare-ups, and improved function, even while living with a diagnosed condition. While these techniques don’t cure the underlying disease, they can help to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life, working alongside any medical care you may be receiving.

Somatic Therapy (Embodied Processing) is an evidence-based, integrative approach that combines somatic and psychotherapeutic principles to support healing and transformation. It works with the whole person: mind, body and spirit.

This bottom-up approach is especially effective for addressing trauma, chronic stress, and deeply held patterns in the body and nervous system.

Embodied Processing (EP) draws from modern neuroscience and respected modalities such as Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), NARM, NeuroAffective Touch, the Diamond Approach, and Compassionate Inquiry.

It helps activate the body’s innate ability to release stress, recover, and return to balance. By meeting ourselves with presence and compassion, change unfolds naturally from within.

EP’s power is rooted in the wisdom of leading pioneers in the trauma-healing space, including Peter Levine, Bessel Van Der Kolk, Deb Dana, Pat Ogden, and Stephen Porges.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i) is a gold standard evidence-based, structured approach to help people overcome chronic sleep difficulties.

Unlike sleeping pills, CBT- i addresses the underlying thoughts, habits, and behaviours that disrupt sleep. It combines practical strategies: like sleep scheduling, relaxation techniques, and healthy sleep routines; with tools to change unhelpful thinking patterns about sleep.

Research shows CBT-i is highly effective for treating insomnia and often leads to long-lasting improvements in sleep quality and overall well-being.

SIRPA stands for Stress Illness Recovery Practitioner Association. It’s an evidence-based approach designed to help people recover from chronic pain and other persistent symptoms that are not fully explained by a structural or medical diagnosis.

The goal is to address the root causes of stress-related or mind-brain-body connection conditions by helping individuals understand the link between the brain, nervous system, and physical symptoms. By retraining the brain-body responses, many people experience significant relief or full recovery.
